UN World Day of Social Justice 20 February 2025 - IBA specialist committees focus on eradicating poverty

Thursday 20 February 2025

The video of a recent webinar organised by International Bar Association (IBA) specialist Committees which concentrated on UN Sustainable Development Goal 1 (End poverty in all its forms everywhere) is being shared in honour of the United Nations World Day of Social Justice on 20 February. It is estimated that 575 million people live in extreme poverty.

The webinar was presented by the IBA Poverty and Social Development Committee, with support from the IBA Academic and Professional Development Committee, the IBA Access to Justice and Legal Aid Committee and the Human Rights Research and Education Centre, University of Ottawa, Canada.

Titled ‘The role of international law and institutions in attaining Goal 1 of the SDGs’, the webinar explored how international legal frameworks, institutions and multilateral agreements play a pivotal role in the eradication of poverty. The conversation centred on mechanisms through which global governance and law can create effective pathways to poverty alleviation, emphasising the significant legal tools and strategies to accelerate progress toward realising Goal 1 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The pressures on low- and middle-income families, as well as gender roles in poverty – where women bear the majority of childcare and family duties – were further topics of discussion, as well as possible solutions; for example, the provision of childcare facilities that would help women to gain paid work.

The webinar participants also discussed World Bank initiatives such as the World Bank Gender Strategy 2024–2030, which includes focus on increasing access to economic resources and levels of ‘human capital’ by supporting skills and knowledge development amongst women. Support from the World Bank has also helped the Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative, which is a collaborative organisation including 14 governments, eight banks, and other public and private sector bodies that tackle the barriers women face – both financial and non-financial.

Another webinar presented by the IBA Poverty and Social Development Committee with cross-Committee support on a related topic is Illicit financial flows, drivers of poverty and vulnerability: a sustainable development quagmire.
