Biography

Dr. Charles A ADEOGUN-PHILLIPS is an accomplished international lawyer, former lead international prosecutor and head of special investigations at the United Nations. He is founder of Charles Anthony, a cross-border law practice. He also practices as a Barrister specialising in international law and climate justice litigation, from Guernica 37 (International law) Chambers at 6, Pump Court, London. He specialises in the areas of public international law, international human rights law, international criminal law, international anti-corruption law, international asset recovery, international civil service law and international climate change law. Having led 12 precedent-setting genocide trials before the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, wherein he obtained 12 genocide convictions against 13 defendants, he is widely regarded as one of the leading and most experienced international criminal lawyers in the world. He has been recognised in the Who’s who of Public International law and was honoured with an LL. D by the University of Warwick, in recognition of his contribution to the development of international criminal law. His case in defence of the Tanzanian politician, Christopher Mtikila before the African Court of Human and Peoples’ Rights, is highly regarded as a watershed and landmark human rights case. He also has significant experience of business and white-collar crime, civil fraud, and non-conviction-based asset forfeiture cases, as well as in international civil service law. As part of his asset recovery practice, since 2017, he has been retained by the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria, to investigate, trace and recover over 5 trillion Naira (14 billion US Dollars), currently owed to the Nigerian Government, following its acquisition in 2011, of non-performing loans from some of the country’s ailing commercial banks. He is very experienced at leading complex international investigations and dealing with high value and complex first instance disputes. He acted as investigation counsel in the $11.3 billion FRN vs. P&ID case, the largest civil fraud case ever to be litigated before an English commercial court.
